Martin D-28 Acoustic Guitar

Description

Many discerning guitarists instantly name the Martin D-28 as their all-time favorite Martin; it is the standard to which all acoustic guitars are compared. Affectionately dubbed the “tone cannon,” the D-28 deploys classic rich tone and powerful projection that’s perfect for stage and studio. Martin has re-imagined the D-28, blending the rich legacy of the guitar with their latest innovations. Vintage appointments include open-gear tuners, an aged toner top, antique white accents, and a faux tortoise pickguard. Forward-shifted bracing allows for greater vibration of the top, while a modern neck profile gives you improved comfort and playability. We spend a lot of time with acoustic guitars at AalbergAudio, and this D-28 delivers the iconic Martin sound by boatload.

What do people say about it?

You can find some feedback and guitar reviews on Amazon, Sweetwater and Thomann. Overall the Martin D-28 has been rated on average 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon Review.

Amazon Reviews #1“I have not played this guitar for a really long time yet, but I have played long enough to realize that it is the best guitar that I have ever owned. I previously played a Martin D-16RGT, which is very similar to the D-28. And I must say that the D-16 is an excellent guitar, and I do not plan to get rid of mine. However, the D-28 beats it in volume, resonance, and tone. It has more volume due to the deeper soundbox, I believe, and its tone is a very nice balance and rich. Just as advertised it has a strong bass and a clear treble. Its resonance is astounding; It keeps ringing long after you hit the strings. I was going to get a different guitar, but I believe that the Lord led me to this one. I have no regrets about getting this guitar and I know that I’m going to get a lot of enjoyment from playing it!”

Amazon Reviews #2 “Having owned a few amazing American solid wood guitars. I have to say, this new 2017 era D28 is my favorite. The impeccable craftsmanship is outstanding. It’s flawless.

The Sitka top is a work of art. The intonation and sustain are world-class. The tuners are microscopic in detail tuning with their fine gear ratio. One caveat and it’s a compliment. The D28 is string picky. Mediums non-coated are what makes this wood shine. Not to say you can’t use any string but, the big dread is so accurate, it brings the flaws and the greatness out in the strings.. get great bP medium or medium-light strings non coated and enjoy.”

What do people say about it?

You can find some feedback and guitar reviews on Amazon, Sweetwater, and Thomann. Overall the Martin HD-28 has been rated on average 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon Review.

Amazon Reviews #1“Never owned a good acoustical guitar. (Have a great vintage electric and amp that I haven’t picked up for years). This new guitar is fabulous. Great tone. Easy to play. It’s all coming back to me. Love it.”

Amazon Reviews #2“Beautiful guitar in every way!”

To get a better idea of how the Martin HD-28  sounds and looks like, we have provided you with a couple of Youtube videos, where you can get a quick demo of the guitar.

YouTube Review #1 – It’s iconic. It’s a powerhouse dreadnought. The Martin HD-28 has made a name for itself and has basically set the bar for which all other dreadnoughts are measured. What makes it so special? How does this particular one sound?

Advantages Over Each Other

Since both guitars have almost the same specifications, here are some advantages of both guitars that would help differentiate one from the other.

Martin D-28

  • Classic and elegant design
  • Relatively more affordable
  • Provides a clear and balanced tone

Martin HD-28

  • Skillfully made neck to bracing, allowing it to be as precise as ever
  • Gives a full and loud tone
  • Its scalloped bracing allows its tone to have a balanced sound with a bit of a sweet touch to it
  • Improved and relatively more attractive design

Conclusion

Choosing which one is better is a tough choice, especially when it looks and feel almost as if one is a clone of the other one. The Martin HD-28 and D-28 might look the same at one glance, but when you take a deeper look at the two, you’ll realize that the two might be different after all.

With its overall quality and sound performance, you’ll get more than what you’re paying with the Martin HD-28. Dubbed as an improved and more modern version of the D-28 the HD-28 is louder and gives stronger bass. Every harmonic is articulated with the HD-28.

Aside from its sound quality, the HD-28 is almost more physically attractive. With its herringbone inlays and decorative Tortoise Shell patterned pick-guard, the HD-28 will remind you of the “Golden Era”.

Coming from a brand that’s known to be a powerhouse of excellent and legendary guitars, both the HD-28 and D-28 offer premium craftsmanship and outstanding sound. However, it all really comes down to personal preferences and the specifics you’re looking for.

If a major factor you’re looking at is its price, the Martin D-28 is a relatively more affordable choice than the HD-28. Since it comes from the same company, the d-28 guarantees an excellent sounding acoustic.
